A lifetime of professional Biology, floral development, and staring at the ground has brought me here...
The Art of Science - My Story
My first "Ahah" moment into the invisible world of Biology specimens came when I was enrolled in a Specilaized Microscopy class at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. One of the modules I signed up for was Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). My samples were Queen Anne's Lace seeds and grass blades covered in rust fungus - I was hooked.
My Masters and PhD at the University of Toronto (Ontario, Canada) continued my passion for SEM, primarily to study floral development in members of the Rose Family (Rosaceae). Fast forward a few decades and I started using Macro Photography to capture details of plants and insects in the field and my lab. This also led to obtaining the equipment necessary for focus stacking.
In July 2022 I retired and took on my photography passion head on. Having become a professional car photographer (HidefRodsPhotography) over the last decade, and publishing a quarterly Hot Rod & Custom magazine (Maritime Rod & Custom), I set my sights on investigating an idea I've had since my PhD days - Science as Art.
Wholly Macro!!! Photography was born! My goal is to register for local Craft and Art shows in Maritime Canada, but also make my art available through this site. I hope you're able to see what I see, and please feel free to reach out (rodger.c.evans@gmail.com) with constructive criticism and any special requests you may have for a biology-based image you've always dreamt would make beautiful art!!!
